Maimará and Tilcara

Maimará and Tilcara are two small villages in the province of Jujuy, in north-west Argentina. Nestling in the Humahuaca Valley, they are surrounded by impressive geological formations. The region is rich in tradition, with a strong cultural influence from the local Kolla, Quechua and Aymara communities. The village is also renowned for its handicrafts, particularly weaving with colourful motifs. The flora and fauna are typical of semi-arid regions, with cacti and indigenous trees such as the queñua. The local community maintains traditional agricultural practices, including growing maize and potatoes. Carnival is one of the most important festivals, celebrating the blending of traditions. The local gastronomy, based on maize, potatoes and llama meat, is a cornerstone of the ancestral culture. Tourism is managed by the communities in a sustainable way to preserve the region's cultural and natural heritage.
